About Us and Why We’re Hiring
Let’s Do the Books provides bookkeeping services to life coaches, solo consultants and freelancers. We’re different (maybe even a little weird) because our primary bookkeeping platform is YNAB (pronounced why-nab, stands for “you need a budget”).
Our clients’ businesses are very simple: they have very small teams (or they operate solo), they don’t sell physical products or carry inventory, and they don’t have fleets of trucks or widget-making machines. We provide a simple service to simple businesses, and we really enjoy it.
Who You’d Be Working With
I’m Mark Butler, the founder of the business. I’ve been the “money guy” for life coaches and other online business owners since 2014, and I’ve supported businesses that generate up to $25,000,000+ per year. For much of that time I worked closely with a small handful of clients in a Chief Financial Officer role. Along the way I started offering simple bookkeeping to clients whose businesses I understood well, but who didn’t need an expensive CFO.
In 2020 I launched Let’s Do the Books as a stand-alone service. Since then, the number of bookkeeping clients has increased over 10x, and I’d like to create similar growth over the next few years. That’s why I’m hiring you.
How We Work
We work from home on a flexible schedule.
We mostly work during regular business hours on weekdays, but there’s no set schedule or required hours, especially in the business development role. The job is results-driven, so you’ll mostly choose when you work.
We don’t hold many meetings, and most of our communication is through text, video messages, and the occasional Zoom call.
More about the job.
The job is results-driven and requires high personal initiative.
This is a new position, so you’ll help design and define it. As Business Development Specialist, you’re not exactly a salesperson and not exactly a marketer, but your job has both sales and marketing in it.
Your most important job will be building relationships with leaders in the coaching community. You’ll spend time in their online spaces; you’ll participate and add value. You’ll look for opportunities for Let’s Do the Books to be of service.
Here are some examples of how that might work:
I’ve taught classes, led discussions, and facilitated coaching calls for coaching community leaders. Through these teaching and coaching opportunities, clients are introduced to me and my bookkeeping service. A few of them eventually become bookkeeping clients.
I’ve developed mini-courses and simple tools (guides, spreadsheets, etc) that a business coach includes in her courses. For example, a module on business finance and bookkeeping with video, text, and spreadsheet templates. Through the content I contribute to these courses, coaches are introduced to me and my service, and a few of them become bookkeeping clients.
Coaching community leaders have invited me as a guest on their podcasts. We discuss the financial aspects of coaching practices, as well as business models, and basically any other topic that relates to business of coaching. Coaches hear me on the podcast, and a few of them sign up for the service.
As Business Development Specialist, your job will be to facilitate these speaking, teaching, and community contribution opportunities. I already do a little of all of the above. Your job will be to help me do a lot of all of the above.
Compensation
This job will not be commission-only, but it’ll be a good fit for a person who wants to her effort to impact her income. You’ll likely be paid in some combination of the following ways:
- Some amount of base pay for the relationship-building activities that have value to my business but don’t directly correspond to new bookkeeping signups.
- Commissions earned when a coach you’ve personally connected with signs up for the service.
- Overrides on referral/affiliate relationships you cultivate. In other words, when a referral partner makes a sale, they make a commission and you make an override.
If you’re a good fit for the role, and if you’re excited to work with me, we’ll work out the specifics of compensation together.
You might be a good fit for the role if…
You’re already active in or familiar with the coaching community. Maybe you’re a certified coach who loves the work coaches do but isn’t excited about meeting with ten clients per week. Maybe you’ve worked with a coach or have friends who are coaches.
You want the financial upside of a variable income opportunity. You want your earnings to correspond to your creativity and effort.
You like the chase. You’re more hunter than farmer. Maybe you have a competitive streak and you want to win whatever game you’re playing.
You’re independent and place a high value on autonomy. You want to be free to create results without much interference from a manager.
You like the sound of “as long as you’re producing, nobody cares when you work, how you work, or where you work.” You want the freedom of entrepreneurship without all the work and overhead that comes after a client says “yes” to the service. You love the idea of facilitating a transaction and then turning that client over to the nerds (me and the rest of the team) who deliver the service.
How to apply
Please write a short email explaining why you’re the right person for this job. If you address it “To whom it may concern,” I will know you’re not a good fit. Send it to team@markbutler.com and include the phrase “more hunter than farmer” in the subject line. Thanks in advance for applying; I look forward to getting to know you.
